Chapter Seven
Danica
Not once have I ever skipped practice. Now weâve done it twice.
Someone might blame Dean for being a bad influence. They would be wrong. It is me who suggests we go to a movie the afternoon we make love for the first time. As soon as the movie was over, we were all over each other in the jeep and I got to experience sex in a car for the first time.
We trained hard the next day before we wound up hooking up a little too loudly in the showers. Samara gave me a knowing look when she joined us for dinner afterward, but she said nothing. The same cannot be said today, just a week before our first program when I said I was taking the day.
âYou both need focus. Too much hanky pankies.â
Laughing at her, I promise we have remained focused. We know what weâre up against. We need to make the national team if we want a chance at being part of the team that goes to the Olympics. Weâre perfect on the ice together. Dean has become one of the best skaters I have ever seen.
Since skating with him, I've regained my love for it. I find myself laughing on the ice, enjoying every moment. While winning the gold was my sole aspiration for so long, now, half of me doesn't care about gold. Having fun while doing what I love matters more than any win could.
âIs our drill sergeant mad?â Dean asks as his hand grips my thigh, his other hand on the wheel as he drives.
Smiling at him, I nod and shrug at the same time. âSamara said too much hanky pankies,â I tell him with a grin.
Dean chuckles with a shake of his head. We will work twice as hard once we go back. Today is about us spending some time together. He has no idea where weâre headed, even if he is the one driving. I made a decision after my former partner showed up at the rink, throwing me off. I will have to face him at nationals, but I wonât ever lose it that way again.
For years I have trained at the rink my mother first took me to. It was my way of staying connected to her. It was where I trained with Julien, with Leah, and now with Dean. I no longer want to train somewhere that has memories that hurt. It is time I let go of the things that hold me back.
âYou going to tell me where weâre going, princess?â
âNo. Going to show you once we get there. Take this left. You look so handsome today,â I praise him, reaching out to brush his dark hair back.
In a nice blue flannel and dark jeans, he looks kind of like a hot lumberjack. I suddenly want to climb him like a tree, and I giggle. I never felt this way with anyone else. Not on or off the ice. Weâre magic together.
I think I am in love with him.
